How Criminal Minds’ Voit Cliffhanger Sets Up Season 3 Story Teased By Showrunner

Zach Gilford as Elias Voit and Joe Mantegna as David Rossiin Criminal Minds: Evolution

Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 ends on a major Elias Voit (Zach Gilford) cliffhanger that showrunner Erica Messer teases will be vital in season 3’s story. The mystery of Gold Star is officially over after the BAU took down the whole operation. However, work doesn’t stop for the profilers as they set their sights on their next case for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3. Unlike the season 1 finale, which explicitly planted plot seeds for its sequel’s story, season 2 was more subtle about this matter. Still, Voit’s cliffhanger fate will be instrumental in what’s to come for the BAU.

In a new interview with TV Line, Messer confirms that while the Gold Star case is officially closed, BAU’s ordeal with Voit is far from over. Despite not getting into plot specifics, she teases that season 2’s story was merely a distraction, and that Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 will officially tackle an important part of Sicarius’ arc. Read her full quote below:

He threw us the curve ball with Gold Star, he wanted us on a new quest. But what did he distract us from? His network.

Not 100%, because we still have Voit in our life. It’s a bit more hybrid. Remember, we didn’t solve Gold Star really until we caught Damien, so that was sort of an ongoing story for most of the season. This [next] season will feel a little different, where we’re solving standalone “Catch the Bad Guy” cases.

Why Voit Is Still The Main Villain In Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3

The BAU Needs To Do Better To Finally Defeat Sicarius

Voit’s story ending with a random inmate conflict instead of the BAU nailing him down would be disappointing.

At the end of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, Prentiss was rescued by the rest of the BAU after getting abducted by the late Deputy Director Bailey’s disillusioned brother. Pete Bailey was manipulated by Voit to terrorize the profilers and ultimately, force him to take down the whole team by making the Unsub believe that it was the bureau’s fault that his brother died. Up until the very end, the BAU was bested by Sicarius. Considering this, there were already doubts that he was actually killed in prison through an attack by two nameless inmates.

There are a few reasons why bringing back Voit for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 is imperative. Primarily, the BAU has yet to defeat him. Granted that they took down his network of serial killers in season 1, but he beat them in their own game every step of the way in season 2. The profilers were even forced to make a deal that would put him in the general population of prison in exchange for information about Prentiss’ abduction. Voit’s story ending with a random inmate conflict instead of the BAU nailing him down would be disappointing.

The good thing is that Gilford is confirmed to still be part of the Criminal Minds: Evolution core cast when it returns for season 3. Messer has previously confirmed that he will survive the stabbing attack in prison, which makes his upcoming comeback more interesting. Hopefully this time, however, the BAU finally figures out a way to lock Sicarius up for good.
