Love Is Blind’s Monica Recalls How She Found Stephen’s ‘Kinky, Dirty’ Texts After His Sleep Test
"I'm not kink-shaming. I've been accused of kink-shaming already," Monica Davis clarified. "I just didn't know that this was the person I was, you know, that I was sharing a bed with"
Love Is Blind‘s Monica Davis is revealing how she found those texts.
During the Oct. 10 episode of The Viall Files podcast, the sales executive, 37, opened up about the fateful moment she discovered her fiancé Stephen Richardson‘s explicit messages to another woman while they were outside of the pods.
After leaving the season 7 pods engaged, Love Is Blind contestants are provided an apartment space in the same building to live as a couple before heading to the altar. Monica explained that their fellow costars, Taylor Krause and Garrett Josemans, were going to make everyone “fall cookies” and informed them they would send a text once they’re ready to be dropped off.
“So Stephen and I were hanging out in the apartment, having a great, great time laughing,” she recalled, adding there were genuinely enjoying each other’s company without cameras.
Eventually, Stephen, 34, “stepped into the bathroom and as he did, his phone went off, and he got a text that we were waiting for,” Monica said.
“And I said, ‘Oh, babe, like Garrett just texted, I’m gonna respond. It’s about the cookies,'” Monica continued. “And I went to go, click the message, and next thing you know, I’m in his text, and I see a girl’s name… This was something I was not expecting from this person, really at all.”
Despite her better judgement, the reality star opened the message and discovered Stephen had been sexting another woman while they were engaged. She confessed she didn’t remember exactly what his texts said, but felt “so taken aback” and like she “couldn’t breathe” as she scrolled.
“Even right after it all went down, I didn’t even remember the girl’s name,” she explained. “Truly, I do remember seeing, like, really kinky, dirty talk, like one specific message was just talking about how he’s never been been able to find someone who’s satisfies his kinks, the way that she does.”
Monica clarified, “I’m not kink-shaming. I’ve been accused of kink-shaming already. I just didn’t know that this was the person I was, you know, that I was sharing a bed with.”
In the latest batch of episodes from season 7 of the Netflix hit, fans were in for a shock as it was revealed that Stephen went off to do a sleep test one night, but ended up sexting another woman while there, despite being engaged to Monica.
The emotional confrontation — which was particularly poignant as Stephen had previously admitted to doing something similar in a past relationship while in the pods with Monica — ultimately ended with Stephen apologizing for his actions, Monica breaking down in tears and the two breaking up.
“I can’t do anything to change this, I will live with this,” Stephen said before leaving their shared apartment. “I truly am sorry for hurting you, for wasting your time, for coming on the show and doing this to you. I shouldn’t have come on the show.”
Monica eventually refused to accept Stephen’s apology and clapped back when he claimed only sent the explicit messages after “the conversation that we had last night.”
“Don’t you f—ing blame me at all for you being gross,” she replied. “I’m almost embarrassed about how much of my heart I’ve given you. You were gonna shake my dad’s hand this weekend? While you were planning on cheating? I don’t understand.”
Stephen later joked to PEOPLE of his actions: “It is probably smart to put a password on your phone.” He then added, “But in all seriousness, the main things are self-talk, self-reflection, and a lot of the things that I believe I said it in the pods, where it’s like you don’t know if you’re fully healed until your next relationship,” he continues. “And you see a lot of people talking about, ‘Well, you should have completed therapy before you entered this.’ And I’m always like, ‘Is therapy a completion? Do you complete therapy?’ No, it should be an ongoing thing because you’re always growing and learning.”
