The WNBA is expanding, as they will be adding the Golden State Valkyries into the fold for the upcoming 2025 campaign. As a result, an expansion draft needed to take place in order for the team to be able to trot out a group of players during their inaugural season, and one of Caitlin Clark’s former teammates has a new home as a result.

Clark entered the WNBA with the Indiana Fever last season, and promptly put together a dominant campaign as a result, as she averaged 19.2 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game. The end result was a bevy of individual accolades, including the first All-Star selection of her career and the 2024 Rookie of the Year award.

The star Fever guard wasn’t the only former Iowa Hawkeye to make their debut in the NBA last year, as her former teammate also broke into the league with the Las Vegas Aces. However, Martin is already moving to a new home, as she was scooped up in the expansion draft by the Valkyries.

Per Sabreena Merchant and Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic, “The Golden State Valkyries will be selecting Kate Martin and Kayla Thornton in the 2025 WNBA expansion draft, a source briefed on the decision told The Athletic.”

As a second-round pick who joined an Aces team with championship aspirations, Martin didn’t make the same impact as Clark did during her rookie campaign. Over 34 games of action, Martin averaged 2.6 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 0.9 assists per game during her time on the floor with Las Vegas.

Now, Martin could have a chance to earn some more minutes with the Valkyries. While she may not end up earning a starting spot, Martin has proven that she can be a reliable shooter from behind the arc, as she hit 35.5% of her threes last year, so she could be used as a spark plug scorer off the bench.

This doesn’t impact Clark too much, as she will still bump into Martin a couple times throughout the year, with the only main difference being the team she’s playing for. The full results of the Valkyries expansion draft will be revealed on Friday night.
