Flau’jae Johnson already knows who biggest threat to Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese is

Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark have taken the WNBA by storm, with the two star rookies breaking records seemingly every night. However, LSU star Flau’jae Johnson believes there’s another star coming for Clark and Reese: Paige Bueckers.

Bueckers was expected to be a top pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. However, the star guard elected to skip the draft, deciding to remain at UConn for one more season to hone her craft and compete with a fully healthy squad under legendary coach Geno Auriemma.

With Bueckers set to declare for the 2025 draft, it is almost assured she will be a top pick, provided she has a fully healthy and successful final campaign with the Huskies. In that same vein, Johnson is confident in Bueckers’ ability to make an impact when she enters the league.

In a clip posted to Instagram, Bueckers is seen playing pickup basketball with Johnson and a handful of other players. The clip in question shows Bueckers juking out a defender with a behind-the-back move before finishing with a right-handed layup for the win.

Upon seeing her finish, Johnson couldn’t help but praise Bueckers for her nifty move to seal the game. Seeing the camera, Johnson simply stated: “That mother—— is not real.”

The 22-year-old’s pursuit of winning is unflappable, to the point that the Instagram post’s caption stated: “Paige couldn’t leave for the day without winning the pickup game.” With how Bueckers is the next prized prospect to enter the league, many teams will be vying for the opportunity to draft her, though it appears the Los Angeles Sparks have the best odds to do so.

By amassing the worst record in the WNBA this season by way of a multitude of injuries – including star rookie Cameron Brink – and having one of the worst records last season, the Sparks are in a prime position to draft Bueckers, if Los Angeles does get the No. 1 overall pick. As it stands, the Sparks have a 44.2 percent chance of landing the first pick, with the Dallas Wings having the second-best odds at 27.6 percent.

Even if the Sparks somehow don’t land the No. 1 pick, they are still guaranteed a top-three pick in the draft. Should Los Angeles not get the first pick, it could pivot to drafting USC star Kiki Iriafen, pairing the talented forward with two other talented bigs in Brink and Rickea Jackson.

Regardless of where she is drafted, Bueckers surely will be one of the more sought-after players in the upcoming draft. It remains to be seen ultimately which team will have the opportunity to do so, but Bueckers is expected to be an impact player, much like Clark and Reese.

That said, while Bueckers prepares for her final college season, she has made it clear that she could be interested in playing for the Golden State Valkyries, an expansion team. When the Valkyries first announced their merchandise, Bueckers was quick to point out her admiration for their color scheme.

“Prettiest colorway ever,” Bueckers wrote on X. And while she might want to play for Golden State, the odds of the star playing for the expansion franchise are very low.

Typically expansion teams draft after the teams that did not make the playoffs and so in this instance, the Valkyries would be drafting at No. 5. Regardless of where she ends up playing, Bueckers is next up after Reese and Clark, if Johnson is to be believed.
