In a passionate defense of Caitlin Clark, controversial sports analyst Stephen A. Smith voiced his frustration with critics of the Indiana Fever star, calling out what he views as a double standard in how the young player has been treated.

Clark, who capped off her phenomenal debut season by being named the 2024 Associated Press WNBA Rookie of the Year, has faced scrutiny from some corners of the basketball world, despite her historic achievements on the court.

Smith didn’t hold back when expressing his discontent with those who he believes are unfairly attacking the young star.

“They act like there isn’t or hasn’t been legitimate resentment,”Smith said, referencing the vocal critics, including former WNBA players and commentators. “But nobody’s fooled here.”

Smith made it clear that many of Clark’s detractors, particularly those who have played in the WNBA, are perpetuating a narrative that downplays her contributions and impact.

He argued that the backlash Clark faces is rooted in envy and resentment from those who were part of the league’s earlier days.

“We talk about it when the men do it! … But when the ladies are feeling that way about another young lady like Caitlin Clark and people like myself and Shay Shay [Shannon Sharpe] call it out, suddenly it’s a problem! Come on, we can act like we don’t know, but we know,”Smith added.

Caitlin Clark shuts down noise with historic rookie season

The 22-year-old guard has had a standout season, breaking several records and helping to boost interest in the WNBA.

Clark led all rookies in points (19.2 ppg), assists (8.4 apg), and 3-point field goals made (122) during the regular season.

Her impact was not just on the stat sheet, but also in the league’s overall visibility, contributing to record-setting attendance and television viewership numbers.

Despite these accolades, Clark has been the subject of criticism, with some claiming she is being over-hyped. However, her numbers tell a different story.

Clark started all 40 games for the Indiana Fever, leading the team to a significant rise in ticket sales and media attention.

For her efforts, she was not only named Rookie of the Year but also earned spots on both the AP All-WNBA First Team and the AP All-Rookie Team.
