Megyn Kelly Slams Caitlin Clark’s False Modesty: “Starting to Understand Why They Don’t Like Her”

In the movie *Broadcast News* – one of my all-time favorites – there is a memorable line. Holly Hunter plays a television news producer who is known for her blunt and uncompromising personality.
In one scene, she is talking to William Hurt, who plays a cocky news anchor. He is rising to the top of the industry, despite his lack of seriousness and intellectual depth.
Holly Hunter gives him a pointed rebuke: “I got these opportunities by jumping over the heads of all the people who worked hard, but at least I feel guilty about it.”
This line immediately reminded me of K. Lin Clark. She is the embodiment of cockiness and a sense of worthiness. She seems to be at the top of her game, confident that all her achievements are due to her own efforts. But then she shows a little “contrition” to soften her arrogance.
“Oh, take a picture of me from the left, that’s my best angle. The cover? I’m going to wear this sexy dress to the ESPN interview, where I look gorgeous, and all eyes are on me. But I’m going to act like I really feel guilty about it.”
She also tries to be thoughtful and sensitive to social issues. For example, she might ask, “Are there any black women in my photo? I’d like to include some black women.” And when she gets the answer that no one is willing, she might gently say, “Oh, then it’s just me.”
Honestly, after watching her act, I’m starting to understand why so many people don’t like her. The combination of perfect appearance, smug attitude but trying to cover it up with a sense of “guilt” makes people uncomfortable instead of sympathetic.
