Caitlin Clark dominated the basketball scene in 2024, outshining even the NBA and WNBA in television ratings. The top 100 U.S. broadcasts of the year were recently revealed, and the only basketball game to make the list was one featuring Caitlin Clark. Despite the hype surrounding stars like LeBron James, Angel Reese, and A’ja Wilson, their games didn’t draw nearly the same attention.
Ranking 76th on the list of most-watched broadcasts, the NCAA Women’s Final between Iowa and South Carolina attracted a staggering 18.9 million viewers.
This made it the most-viewed basketball game of the year, surpassing even major events like Game 5 of the World Series featuring the Yankees and Dodgers. Remarkably, Clark’s game also drew more viewers than the SEC Championship game and some NFL matchups, including Cowboys vs. Buccaneers.
Clark’s appeal isn’t just limited to her on-court performance. On the “New Heights” podcast hosted by Jason and Travis Kelce, she shared the story of her college decision. Growing up in the Midwest, Clark admired Notre Dame’s storied sports tradition and even considered playing for the Fighting Irish.
Her family was eager for her to attend Notre Dame, but in the end, she trusted her instincts. “I could feel it in my gut—I wasn’t supposed to go there,” she explained. Instead, she chose the University of Iowa, where she spent her entire college career.
During her time at Iowa, Clark shattered numerous NCAA records, including becoming the all-time leading scorer across men’s and women’s college basketball. Her decision paid off, both personally and professionally. At Iowa, she met her boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, a member of the men’s basketball team and the son of Iowa’s head coach, Fran McCaffery.
After graduating, Clark made history as the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA Draft. Her rookie season was nothing short of legendary, breaking 64 rookie and league records, including most assists in a game and a season. Her dominance cemented her as one of the most exciting players in basketball.
What’s particularly noteworthy is that no NBA game in 2024 came close to surpassing Clark’s viewership numbers. LeBron James, widely considered a global superstar, didn’t generate a single broadcast with comparable ratings. Clark’s impact was undeniable—she captured the attention of sports fans in a way that even the NBA couldn’t match.
The NFL still dominated the list, claiming 73 of the top 100 broadcasts. However, Caitlin Clark’s extraordinary viewership numbers prove her unique ability to draw fans, elevating women’s basketball to new heights. Her achievements both on and off the court underscore her status as one of the brightest stars in sports.
